You need to make sure that the system tubing and flow cell can handle the volumes required for a 7.8mm ID column.

You also need to ensure that the system pressure itself (when no column is installed) is not high enough to damage the column.

In some cases, the system pressure, with no column, may be low. Because these columns will not cause a very high increase in back pressure, it is possible that restriction tubing is needed before the column in order to provide adequate back pressure the the pumps.
