A guard column protects the main separation column from chemical and/or physical damage.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
If a guard column is not used, particulates can plug the column inlet frit.
In addition, chemical contaminants that might otherwise adsorb to the main column will adsorb to the guard first, which will protect the main column.
When there is an increase in back pressure or a peak shape issue is observed, replace the guard.
