Why is my 9.3K polystyrene standard tailing when I run my Styragel GPC column in DMF? - WKB236107

SYMPTOMS

• All peaks broader, but tailing with 9.3K polystyrene peak

ENVIRONMENT

• GPC
• Styragel column
• Polystyrene standard
• DMF solvent

CAUSE

No lithium bromide in the DMF mobile phase

FIX or WORKAROUND

1. Add 50mM LiBr to the DMF mobile phase solvent.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

0.05M lithium bromide is added to polar solvents like DMF to reduce non-specific binding and interaction of polymers to the GPC column.
