Can I expose my C18 column to a surfactant in my mobile phase? - WKB116854

Article number: 116854

ENVIRONMENT

  • C18 column
  • Mobile phase

ANSWER

Adding a surfactant such as polysorbate 80 or Tween 20 can substantially reduce the lifetime of the column. Surfactants on a column can form micelles (250A in diameter) in solutions and layers on surfaces.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

If a surfactant must be used in the mobile phase, dedicate the column to the method because the surface chemistry will be altered and consider using a guard column.
